Several city code sections amended regarding golf cart usage
NORFOLK - Golf cart usage in Norfolk was back before the city council at Monday's meeting after the council approved usage within the city just a few months ago.
This month's discussion focused on amending several sections of City Code to allow residents to operate golf carts on roads in town.
The discussion, according to Police Chief Don Miller, stemmed from issued addressed by his officers during a training they went on.
He says one discussed section would include additional streets upon which golf carts could be operated.
"The intent of the ordinance was to keep these neighborhood vehicles from going from one side of the town to another, thus keeping them on 25 mile an hour streets. However, I didn't think about the one way streets of 3rd and 6th Streets form Omaha to Madison Avenue that would have been left out of the ordinance if kept as is."
Miller says they looked at raising the speed to 30 miles an hour, but that would designate streets like Georgia and Pasewalk that they didn't want golf carts on. So they decided to add the above mentioned streets to the ordinance.
He says another section involves removing the requirement of golf carts being equipped with roll bars.
"We quickly found out that a true roll is not designed on pretty much all golf carts we could find. Anything that does have a true roll bar is not a golf cart vehicle, but a low speed vehicle, which can't be licensed under the ordinance."
The final discussed section of amended city code would increase the minimum damage amount to report accidents to $1,500 to meet state statute.
The council voted 7-0 on first reading approving the amended code sections, and again on second and third after voting to suspend the rules.
